Diabetes: prevention and treatment
A staggering 80 percent of American Indians suffer from the crippling effects of diabetes, despite concerted efforts by the Indian Health Services (IHS) to improve diet and to facilitate lifestyle changes. Recent studies show that acute stress exacerbates diabetes and its symptoms. In collaboration with the IHS, the DLF is incorporating the Transcendental Meditation technique into diabetes wellness programs on several American Indian reservations to help bring this disease under control.
Research: Reduced risk factors for diabetes, including cardiovascular disease and obesity.
Awaiting funding: 100,000 tribal members from seven reservations.
